Riverside County, is located in the southern part of California. It is the fourth-largest county in California by area. As per 2010 census, the population was 2189, 64. Riverside County is the fourth-most populous county in California and the 11-th most populous in the United States. Riverside County is included in the Riverside-San Bernardino Metropolitan Area also known as the Inland Empire. Riverside County covers 7,208 square miles (18,670 km2) in Southern California, spanning from the greater Los Angeles area to the Arizona border.

According to the 2000 census, Riverside County has a total area of the county has a total area of 7,303 square miles, of which 7,206 square miles is land and 97 square miles (1.3%) is water. It is the fourth-largest county in California by area.

Riverside County shares borders with Imperial, Orange, San Diego, and San Bernardino Counties, extending from within 14 miles of the Pacific Ocean to the Colorado River. Adjacent counties to Riverside County include: Orange. As of 2011, the population of Riverside County is 660,302 people.  Since 2000, it has experienced a population growth of 1.54%.

The median home value in Riverside County is $387,500 with home appreciation at 0.20% over the last year. The median age of Riverside County real estate is 51 years.  Renters make up 28.45% of the county’s population and 3.64% of houses and apartments are unoccupied.

Recent years have brought dramatic population growth. Between 1980 and 1990, the number of residents grew by over 76 percent, making Riverside the fastest-growing county in California. By 1992, the County was “home” to over 1.3 million residents, more than the entire population of 13 states, among them Maine, Nevada, Hawaii and New Hampshire. Since 1992, the population has nearly doubled.

As the fastest growing county in California, Riverside County is a popular location for those looking to purchase a high-quality home. However, the income of those residing in the county is not the only thing of interest. Riverside County is special for its history, its location and culture.

Indian Reservation – Riverside County has 12 federally recognized Indian Reservations, which ties it with Sandoval County, New Mexico for second most of any county in the United States. (Sandoval County, however, has two additional joint-use areas, shared between reservations.


Things to Know About Riverside County

History – Riverside County was created from parts of San Bernardino County and San Diego County. City of Riverside is the county seat. Riverside County was officially formed on May 9, 1893, when the Board of Commissioners filed the final canvass of the votes.

Riverside County was a major focal point of the Civil Right Movement in the US, especially the African-American sections of Riverside and heavily Mexican-American communities of the Coachella Valley visited by Cesar Chavez of the farm labor union struggle.

The Riverside county’s population surpassed one million people in 1990 (year-round, would be 1980 with seasonal residents) when the current trend of high population growth as a major real estate destination began in the 1970s. Once strictly a place for long distance commuters to L.A. and later Orange County, the county and city of Riverside started becoming more of a place to establish new or relocated offices, corporations and finance centers in the late 1990s and 2000s. More light industry, manufacturing and truck distribution centers became major regional employers in the county.

As far as counties in California go, Riverside County is not that old. It was not actually designated as a county until 1793, when Governor John Hancock signed the legislation to make it so. Nearby Suffolk County was were the majority of the towns newly found in Riverside County originally resided. Boston – the main city in Suffolk County and the most powerful in the state – decided to annex back some of the towns that were pulled into Riverside County. This resulted in Roxbury and Dorchester returning to Suffolk County. Hull and Hingham were also part of the Norfolk County legislation, but the towns petitioned to stay in Suffolk County and were successful in having the decision repealed.

Income – Local employment growth is incredibly strong. The income level of some towns in Riverside County, and in the county as a whole, has been remarked upon by many. Some of the towns in Riverside County are particularly noteworthy. Dover has a per capita income of $82,800, with a median family income of $200,735. Granted, the population is only 5,564, but the income level is impressive.

The next highest income level is found in the town of Wellesley with a population of 27,818. The per capita income of Wellesley is $65,394, with a median family income of $175,156.

Location – Riverside County is located in a prime spot – directly adjacent to Los Angeles County and in ideal proximity to Riverside and San Diego. All of the wealth that is generated in Boston results in individuals and families that want to get out of the city but still remain close enough to have easy access to all the city has to offer. Riverside County has proven a major draw to a number of people looking for a good life without the hassle of living directly in Boston.

Resort Cities – The resort cities of Palm Spring, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Rancho Mirage, and Desert Hot Spring are all located in the Coachella Valley region of central Riverside County.

Transportation

  • Metro linktrains serve nine stations in Riverside County These trains provide service to Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties seven days a week, with a primarily commuter-oriented schedule.
  • Amtrak trains stop in Riverside and Palm Spring and Amtrak California provides bus connections to the San Joaquin’s in Riverside, Beaumont, Palm Spring, Thousand Palms, Indio, Moreno Valley, Perris, Sun City, and Hemet.
  • Palm Spring International Airport and March Air Reserve Base is located in Riverside County.
